Music:Whirring Computers.
Don't you just hate it when people won't post things and insist on a local pickup instead? :-)

Time:3:42 pm.
Mood: amused.
Music:Poison - I Never Cry.
It's odd how sometimes, things that you've forgotten about can unexpectedly resurface. I got an email a couple of weeks ago from the new editor of Forum magazine asking me if they could use an image from my website on their Halloween edition cover. So here it is, currently peeking down at you from assorted (UK) news stands:

This is one of the set of Monica Harris I shot for Libidex way back in December 2007!

Subject:Aquatic Activities Part II
Time:3:52 pm.
Mood: cheerful.
Music:Billy Idol - White Wedding.
Time for the second part of the weekend set with [info]andromeda_x, this time with the same basic setup as before but different backdrop and lighting to give a completely fresh feel. Mega kudos to [info]andromeda_x for being able to come up with brilliant poses despite being on a very slippery surface in a straitjacket; not the simplest of things to do!

Latex by Westward Bound, hair and makeup by [info]andromeda_x. Shot with the 553ELX/P30, Zeiss 50mm f4 FLE and 80mm f2.8 lenses. The lighting is mostly ringflash, but there's so much reflection off the water it isn't obvious at times.

Subject:Real Women and Fake Journalists
Time:2:01 pm.
Mood: bitchy.
Music:A-Ha - The Living Daylights.

This week's "why journalists shouldn't comment on things they don't understand" award goes to the Daily Mail for this piece of nonsense about the Atsuko Kudo dress that Kelly Brook wore to the recent GQ awards.

Addressing such incredibly difficult questions as "How on earth did she get such a tiny waist?" (Take a look at the built-in corset) and "how on earth did she get into it?" (It's got a back zip) the Daily Mail then tries to demonstrate that "real women" can't wear latex and look much better in a cheap dress from a chain store.

At a guess from their picture I suspect that the Daily Mail were defeated by the cunning back zip thingy and couldn't even work out how to do the dress up. So here's a challenge, Daily Mail - give me the same model and same dress and I'll show you how it's done, OK?

Subject:The Perils of Location Shooting
Time:3:22 pm.
Mood: amused.
Music:Iron Maiden - Wrathchild.
I was rather amused at this BBC news item, not because of the shoot itself but the valiant assistant struggling manfully with the big Elinchrom Octa to stop it flying away in the breeze, taking models, photographer and all with it. It's my current favourite light, but it's bad enough to manage in a studio, let alone outside in a howling gale ... :-)

Subject:Military Corset
Time:3:53 pm.
Mood: cheerful.
Music:Susan Cadogan - Hurt So Good.
Bank Holiday Monday saw the return of [info]shadowjen to Gothic Image Towers, this time to shoot a military-styled corset that I won on eBay a couple of months back. The corset itself is by L'Escarpolette, other military accessories by our good friends Sabre Sales in Southsea.

Shot with the 553ELX/P30 and 80mm f2.8, lit with the huge Elinchrom 27" beauty dish and a pair of gridded 600S heads for the rim light.

Subject:Aquatic Activities
Time:7:19 pm.
Music:Random TV.
Some more photography at last, this time persuading [info]andromeda_x down to Gothic Image Towers for the weekend. I'd fancied doing a water-themed shoot for a while, and a roll of pond liner, scaffolding, MDF board, spare wallpaper courtesy of [info]shadowjen and some DIY in the carport produced a workable set. I'm still not sure what the neighbours made of it all!

Latex by Westward Bound, sacrificial shoes by New Look, hair and makeup by [info]andromeda_x. Shot with the Canon 1Ds2, 28-70mm F2.8L and a couple of gridded Elinchrom 600S heads.

Subject:Roswell Ivory Part II
Time:1:02 pm.
Mood: happy.
Music:Eurythmics - Love is a Stranger.
After a bit of a lull, it's been busy recently on the photographic front. Last weekend was the second Libidex mega-shoot, with Clare and Fernanda modelling black catsuits of various designs. I'd only just got home when requests started arriving for images from the previous shoot(!), so they're now up on The Fetishistas (including the cover pic) and will shortly appear in Marquis.

I'll sort some of the new Libidex pics out for LJ but in the meantime here's some more from the recent shoot with [info]roswellivory. Having gone to the expense of hiring a studio, we promptly did a set in the Gents' toilet. And why not?

Hair and makeup by Sammm Agnew, latex by Honour as before, but this time the shoes are YSL Tribute Toos. I see that Myleene Klass wore a pair to the Harry Potter premiere last week. Bet she wasn't wearing the same Tollyboy underwear though ... ;-)

Here's a pic from one set of an all day session with [info]roswellivory a few weekends back. Hair and makeup by Sammm Agnew, latex by Honour, shoes by Louboutin and [info]threnodynvelvet may recognise the Karen Millen suit! :-)

Subject:Bluebells
Time:8:15 pm.
Mood: calm.
Music:Sugababes - Hole in the Head.
Sorry for the lack of posts recently, but work-type stuff keeps getting in the way of more interesting pursuits. I had intended to do a Bluebell woods shoot with [info]shadowjen back in May but a combination of work, weather and illness put a stop to that. However, I realised that we'd shot a set back in May 2007 which has never seen the light of day because we got too involved with the Drac-in-a-Box shoot immediately afterwards.

So here's my favourite from that set, and I really need to wish [info]shadowjen a big Happy Birthday for tomorrow! :-)

Subject:Dita's Eurovision Corset Problem
Time:10:49 am.
Mood: amused.
Music:Thea Gilmore - Have You Heard?.
Those of us who eschewed the hedonistic pleasures of TG for the more erudite(!) offerings of the Eurovision Song Contest will have seen Dita Von Teese trying to put some life into Germany's offering. This failed miserably, possibly due to the song but also because the TV cameraman gave her a thorough ignoring. That might be connected with the problems she'd suffered earlier when her corset was apparently deemed too revealing for the assembled Eurovision viewers.

Here's the original version at rehearsal with jewelled pasties and the performance version with a hastily added ribbon. Quite why this was thought too risque compared to Ukraine's offering complete with dodgy lyrics, gay gladiators and pumping pistons was anyone's guess!

Subject:Focus Catch-up II
Time:3:38 pm.
Mood: calm.
Music:Maxi Priest - Crazy Love.
[info]threnodynvelvet pointed out that I used an image at Focus which I hadn't posted before, so here it is, along with the others you can see on the floor of the stand in my previous post.

This is from the set with [info]harlot_rouge we shot back in August last year. Corset by Inner Sanctum, skirt by Jane Doe, shoes by Christian Louboutin. When I posted one of these previously several people asked why I hadn't used a real glass. So now you know. And no, there's no Photoshopping involved, just good timing and a very short flash duration.

Incidentally, whilst thinking about Louboutins there seem to be a sudden rash of Chinese fakes on eBay at the moment. Saying that they come with replacement heel tips is a bit of a give-away because the real ones don't!

Subject:Focus Catch-up
Time:12:54 pm.
Mood: calm.
Music:Todd Snider - Alright Guy.
The week before the Libidex shoot I was up at Focus at the NEC in Birmingham on the Canon large format printers stand. They'd asked me to be on the stand to give a photographer's viewpoint on the printers, which seemed quite sensible as they were using my images to demonstrate them. It was also good to be at Focus for several days as one day never seems enough to look round all the stands.

I had lots of questions about the images, usually along the lines of "did you really shoot that with a 1Ds2"? There is a definite increase in quality when using the 553ELX/P30 combination, but the 1Ds2 can produce some stunning images even at 42" x 60". The undisputed star image was my Portland Panorama with several people wanting to buy copies afterwards.

Here it is coming off the printer:

And the finished article, occupying the depth of the stand(!):

Subject:Serendipity
Time:8:43 pm.
Mood: amused.
Music:Fairport Convention - Rising for the Moon.
Even in a fairly regimented shoot like the Libidex lookbook, occasionally things go off in an unexpected direction and it's fun to follow and see where they go. This image started as a simple shot to show how the seams work on a catsuit with attached feet. It ended up as a strange piece of abstract art.

The model is Clare (not that you can really tell!)

Subject:Libidex Shoot
Time:6:47 pm.
Mood:accomplished.
Music:Poison - Dead Flowers.
Two days, two models, two clients, two makeup artists, four wardrobe staff, 50 catsuits and 4357 frames shot. The first real shoot this year got 2009 off to a roaring start with part one of the Libidex lookbook. The basic premise was to shoot a catsuit in every colour that Radical Rubber make, and there are a lot of them!

The majority of the images were shot on the 1Ds2 and 28-70mm f2.8L tethered into the laptop as it makes it much easier for models and clients alike to judge the result. On the limited number of occasions when the wardrobe routine allowed it I also shot some "accessorised" versions on the 553ELX/P30 with the Zeiss 150mm f4. I've just about got the hang of focussing the 'blad now but manual focus with the combination of limited MF DoF and a viewfinder that's nowhere as bright as a modern DSLR takes some getting used to. Get it right, and the results are incredible.

Here's a couple of those 'blad shots, with Fernanda in metallic blue. Colour coordinated handcuffs by Kyoung Chang, courtesy of yours truly! ;-)

Subject:Lydia
Time:5:15 pm.
Mood: content.
Music:Bon Jovi - I'll Be There For You.
I think I'll end 2008 with this shot of [info]lydiamorgan. I haven't posted it here before, although those who visited The Xpo back on October will have seen an A3 print in my gallery.

When Beehive Studios closed, I looked around for another convenient and reasonably cheap London studio. I ended up joining The Camera Club in Kennington, who have two studios available for members. They also have the usual calendar of events and activities which includes a monthly Fashion Group. Someone suggested a fetish fashion theme for the September shoot, and oddly enough everyone thought I might be the best person to organise it. I cunningly booked a studio for my own shoot during the day and let it run into the evening for the Fashion Group.

This shot is from the Fashion Group session itself - you'll have to wait a bit for the ones we did during the day. Hair and makeup by Sammm Agnew, medical corset by HW Design.

Time:12:24 pm.
Mood: chipper.
Music:Madonna - Miles Away.
As I suspected, it took me a long time to trawl through all 2500 frames from the Xpo, processing requests from models, magazines and designers alike. I've finally finished, which means that I can get started on the photoshoot backlog that's built up over the last few months!

In the meantime, here's a selection of random images from the Friday Xpo studio sets:

Forget cardboard pseudo-Laplands in the New Forest, here's Loch Luichart shot at around 1pm this afternoon, when it was around six degrees below freezing. A shame I didn't have a "proper" camera with me! :-(

Subject:View from The Gherkin
Time:1:08 pm.
Mood: amused.
Music:Lindisfarne - Lady Eleanor.
Last week I was called to a meeting in town at 30 St. Mary Axe. It wasn't until walking down St. Mary Axe looking at the building numbers that I realised that No. 30 is in fact The Gherkin. Here's a quick pic grabbed from inside with the camera on my 'phone - it wouldn't really have done to look too much like a tourist! :-)

(The Lloyds Building in front, chimney of Bankside (Tate Modern) to the right of it. Tower Bridge is hidden behind the building on the left but visible from the end of the carpeted walkway)

Oh dear! Nothing that a decent plot, a decent villain, some decent sets and a bit of editing wouldn't have fixed. That's possibly why there were literally six other people in the cinema .... :-(
